There’s no shortage of excellent food in Copenhagen, whether you’re in the mood for a New Nordic plate, a traditional Danish dish or an excellent kebab. If you’re after something with a little pep in its step, try out one of the many Michelin star restaurants in the city.

Michelin stars are awarded by the French company Michelin as part of their yearly Guide Michelin, which selects hotels and restaurants for special distinction. There are a range of restaurants with stars in Copenhagen, including a rare three-star rating (Geranium).

Here are the best 2022 Michelin star restaurants in Copenhagen:

List Marker: Number 1Geranium

The first restaurant in Copenhagen with three stars, Geranium is the height of New Nordic luxury eating in the city. Positioned on the eighth floor of the stadium in Fælledparkem, the restaurant provides a sublime view of the city that accentuates the seasonal nature of the menu.

But Geranium’s excellence is not limited to its awe-inspiring location or gastronomic finesse. From the moment you step into the restaurant, you are greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is both elegant and understated.

The staff members at Geranium not only exude charm, but also demonstrate an unwavering commitment to achieving culinary perfection, ensuring that every detail of the meal, from the wine selection to the presentation of each course, meets an exacting standard of flawlessness. Or beyond flawless; this is a 3-star Michelin restaurant after all!

With a menu that changes regularly to showcase the best of Danish and Nordic ingredients, every visit to Geranium is a unique and unforgettable epicurean journey.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a world-class dining experience, Geranium is sure to exceed your expectations.

Fun fact

The restaurant has a custom-made “seed-to-table” greenhouse, where they grow their herbs and vegetables. This allows the chefs to have complete control over the ingredients they use, from seed to plate. Not only does this ensure the freshest possible produce for their dishes, but it also enables the team to dabble with unusual and rare plant strains that seldom land on your plate.

Weds – Sat (Dinner) 6:30 pm – midnight (last seating at 9:30 pm)

List Marker: Number 2Kadeau

Focusing on the produce from the Danish island of Bornholm (where they have another location), Kadeau is New Nordic in its truest sense – seasonal, local, and extremely stylish.

Nestled in the very heart of the Danish capital, the Kadeau dining room envelops you in a cozy, almost ethereal ambiance. The dim lighting and understated décor lend an air of intrigue and mystery, heightening the anticipation for the culinary masterpieces to come. As each dish is meticulously presented with an artistic flourish, the drama builds, creating a dining experience that is nothing short of spellbinding.

The chefs at Kadeau are famed for their constant experimentation with new flavor combinations and techniques, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in Nordic cuisine. They work closely with farmers, fishermen, and foragers on the island of Bornholm to source the freshest and most interesting produce available, which they then transform into inventive and stunning dishes.

Bornholm is known for its unique terroir, a combination of soil, climate, and geography, that gives its produce a distinct and exceptional flavour. Kadaeu’s menu celebrates this by showcasing local ingredients like wild mushrooms, sea buckthorn, and herbs that grow only on the island.

One of their signature dishes is the “Summer in Bornholm,” a stunningly beautiful and delicious dish that features a medley of fresh herbs, flowers, and vegetables from their greenhouse on the island. If you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable culinary experience, Kadeau is not to be missed.

List Marker: Number 3Kiin Kiin

One of the few Thai restaurants outside of Thailand to be awarded a Michelin star, Kiin Kiin takes a modern and elegant approach to the Thai kitchen. The fact that it’s located in the northern Copenhagen neighborhood of Nørrebro gives it a local vibe that you don’t usually get at such an upscale joint.

List Marker: Number 4Kong Hans Kælder

Perhaps you’ve already heard about the vaulted ceilings, wooden floors, and small garret of Kong Hans Kælder, the latter of which was written about in Hans Christian Andersen’s story, “Only a Minstrel.” Mr Andersen himself lived in this building; the oldest in Copenhagen. The restaurant, which opened in 1976, has been considered one of the best in the city since that time.

It was the first restaurant in Denmark to receive a Michelin star, and continues to live up to its stellar reputation to this day. The menu consists of classic French cuisine cooked with the most up-to-date techniques, and the most classic values. Dining at Kong Hans Kælder (literally, King Hans’s Basement) is an impeccable experience.

List Marker: Number 5Alouette

Located on Islands Brygge in a graffiti-covered industrial building, Alouette definitely wins the award for least-likely space to find a Michelin-starred restaurant. American chef Nick Curtin has created a beautiful place where the focus is on the food and wine, but it doesn’t feel pretentious. Seasonality and local ingredients are the key here; so, while you could call it New Nordic, it has a more international outlook than that.

List Marker: Number 6JATAK

The latest addition to the Copenhagen Michelin scene, JATAK quickly became a cult favorite thanks to its fantastic menu, Nørrebro location, and choice of menus. The two menus are the Dining Room and the Kitchen Counter. The Dining Room is a smaller menu, with 8 courses, while the Kitchen Counter is the chef’s menu with 12 courses. There is overlap between both, and they are focused on in-season, local ingredients. The menu, therefore, always changes.

JATAK frequently holds events in partnership with visiting chefs, so be sure to check out their “Collaboration” page to see what’s coming up soon.
